Yes, it occurred to me today that I am a school administrator. That has never been one of my career aspirations, but since I have a homeschool with other people's children, I have become one. I love being able to interject, interrupt, or even replace the plan of the day with some real world learning.
My student and I started talking today about life after high school. This of course was followed by some budgeting questions and sincere interest. Guess what? I decided to move my plans onto tomorrow's box in my lesson plan book and go with my student's line of thinking.
He was shocked to calculate that he'd need to make at least $34,000 a year to afford a very modest one bedroom apartment and a fixer upper vehicle. He was even more shocked to learn that he was not qualified for any of the current job postings in that salary range! I guess it's time to look into post high school education plans.
How do you guide a student on the right path when he really doesn't know what he wants to be when he grows up? Well, it's important to keep in mind that even if my student doesn't know what his plans might be, my God does. After all, the Bible says in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."
So on my first day of realizing that I am a principal, I will tell my teacher this....stay calm and be flexible. It's more important to educate the student than to check off a box in a lesson plan book.
P.S. On this marvelous day of realizing that I'm a principal, I also realized that I'm the janitor. Gotta keep it real.
